Waypoints in Restricted NFZ's

We were concerned about reports that waypoints may not function on the previous generation of DJI drones in an unlocked Restricted (Red) No Fly Zone since the recently implemented DJI Geo fencing system.

As UK CAA approved commercial drone operators, we request temporary unlocks for Restricted No Fly Zones where we have a legitimate and authorised reason to operate within the NFZ.

Waypoints are a fundamental part of the process for obtaining mapping and timelapse imagery so we decided to undertake some tests ourselves to determine if there were any issues

We included a current generation DJI Mavic in our tests for comparison.

Aircraft tested were:-.

  • DJI Phantom 3 Professional
  • DJI Mavic
  • DJI Inspire 1 Pro

We tested for pilot controlled (Freeflight) and autonomous app controlled (Waypoint) flights.

All flights were conducted in accordance with UK regulations and with due diligence to safety.

Disclaimer: No claim is made to any specific level of expertise or vendor approval for these tests.  These test results are our own personal  findings .  Other operators may have different results.  These results are provided for information only.

Here is a summary of our findings...

The individual tests are detailed here for each drone model

DJI Phantom 3 Professional

DJI Mavic

DJI Inspire 1 Pro

Update:

Retests on Pix4d with Mavic Pro on IOS with the same software & firmware levels were successful and all images were captured ok.
